Merry Christmas!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! To You And Yours!

As has been my chosen practice the past few years, my gift giving is in the form of a monthly donation to the relief work of Mercy Corps, based in Portland, Oregon; www.mercycorps.org. This year I plan to add a bit toward the specific goal of providing clean water to a community. By accepting this card in an e-format you are contributing as well and Thank You!

2013 has been a great year building to the zenith of the July wedding joining Alexandria and Tim as Mr and Mrs Creese! And then culminating with a family vacation returning to Kauai in October. Both of these events providing an on going Whirling Dervish look at Luther flying and climbing into the “Twos”. Never a dull moment :0)

Between immersion in the mystical world of emergence and the practical need to “preach” short sermons at Fern Gardens, I have been blessed with a peaceful focus toward relationship and service to all God’s Creation. At this period of the year, as we celebrate the Incarnation of God’s Love among us, that “Coming” becomes so close to each of us as we rest in that Spirit of Immanuel (God With Us).

Dealing with the beauty and visceral nature of facilitating a weekly communion service brings the sacramental nature to a new and even deeper understanding. I am beginning to experience the Eucharist as a “Type”, or “Microcosm”, or example of the whole Gospel of Christ; Caring of each other, Serving each other, Feeding the hungry and thirsty.

Being Blessed to be able to start installing two more Labyrinths this year has been a great joy - These both are the same pattern as Sherita’s Labyrinth at the hospital in Ashland, except larger (7 circuits), with one notable difference. They both are composed with native materials and are laid out to incorporate the local terrain; I.e. Trees are walked around or between not needlessly cut down . Because of the aspect of honoring nature, we have come to call these “Franciscan” Style Labyrinths. One is being installed in the hills above Ashland near the nine mile marker off Dead Indian Memorial Hwy. The second is on the bluff just above Pearl Cove on Kauai.

May This Blessed Season and The New Year Find You All Well and at Peace!
Love! Bob / Dad / Gmpa / Chaplain Bob

The Franciscan Labyrinth at Pearl Cove!

Above is a video of the future site of the Labyrinth recently installed.  Below are two shots from a different angle.
So the text seems to want to rest between these two pictures so I suppose that will do for this post :0)  This whole trip to Kauai this time was very impactful on several levels.  It has now been over five years since Sherita's Passing over and four years since the family memorial on this spot at her request.  This trip was planned by Veronica and was the first long distance vacation for her little family including Luther at a little over 24 months as well as her new son or daughter along for the ride.  It was iffy as to whether she could fly or not, at six months along, but all worked out.  I am glad to have been able to spend a few hours most days at this site above to get a start on this labyrinth.  I am thankful for my family's understanding.  Michael and Alexandria are both married now.  Michael and Gary were here even though Gary was recuporating from surgery, I appreciate that touch very much.  Alex has just started a new job and was unable to come except in spirit.  It was a bit sureal trying to honor the past at the same time being an active part of the current family dynamics.  I believe that overall it was a great time for all.  The age as well as the simplicity of this island really does make it feel like home to me.
A little about this Labyrinth installation.  The picture below does not really do the idea justice.  We do need many more rocks added to complete the effect but the path is pretty clear although hard to see from this angle.  The center is that evergreen and succulent cluster which is about 50 feet from the bluffs edge at Pearl Cove.  Within the leeward side of the cluster I planted a "Kauai Hybiscus" as a focal point in the future.  The walking path enters from the West point (upper left of the picture).  It is a seven circuit path of the same style as the Franciscan Labyrinth at Camp David but somewhat smaller as there are no trees to accomodate.  On my final trip out there this trip I placed a "note in a bottle" on a sheltered rock down in the cove.  The note explains the purpose and intention of the memorial along with a request to add a stone or two if so inclined.  We'll see if the Menehunes are still alive and well in Hawaii :0)  Pax Christi RV

The First and Second Markers and the First Turn.

Below is the short video from my smartphone at the Franciscan Labyrinth.  The entire walk is too much to upload with my device so little bites will have to suffice, I suppose.  These reflections are just some of the many we will be presenting from time to time.  In this first one there are actually two "Thoughts" as we placed one at the start of the path at the Westerly entry, cleverly chosen as "In The Beginning" from the Gospels :0)  And then at the first switchback is the second, taken from a Christian radio ministry many years ago.  It states that "It Is Better To Light One Candle Than To Curse The Darkness".  I hope You enjoy the path.  Pax Christi!  RV

One Bread One Body; One Lord Over All!

The above video is by John Michael Talbot.  I ran across this while attempting to upload a clip of the Franciscan Labyrinth.  The subject of the Communion feast is sometimes an area of much disagreement among Christians which I find disturbing.  Some say that this Sacrament is literally the body and blood of Christ.  There are many conditions upon reception of this Sacrament among well meaning Christians.  Others who do not ascribe to the "True Body and Blood" (Transubstaniation) position do view it as a memorial of the Last Supper and have very few conditions placed upon reception.  I have received Communion all over the world, in a variety of methods,  usually within the Catholic position.  I do find the sacred nature of the Sacrament is a beautiful and fulfilling means of reception,  the part which bothers me is the "private club" or exclusionary aspect of this beautiful example of Love given us by Christ.
In my practice of the Sacrament I have taken a "Yes and" position towards its description and practice as well as it's ultimate meaning.  The only admonition I request from recipients is that they respect the elements of the Sacrament.  I do acknowledge the "True Body and Blood" position as I believe it was so stated in the Gospels.  However I also believe that the ultimate message and memorial aspect of the Eucharist is as important to the receiver.  A form of memorial is a means of remembering an important part of our past.  This can take many forms, like a labyrinth for example, and has done so over the centuries and cultures of the human existence.  When these memorials are based on Love and respect I find merit in them and I'm sure God does as well.  When they devolve into disrespect and/or the blood sacrifice (most often of the "Other") then I feel that it falls out of favor with the God which I worship.   Of late I am coming to realize that the Sacrament which our Lord instituted is maybe something more.  I believe that the act of Communion is a "Type" or example of the entire message which Christ preached.  The Love of God and The Love of all Creation.  It seems clear to me that this Love is best practiced in a Community(of whatever size "two or more") .  This premise to me seems pretty clear when we see most social issues involving serial killing or dissociative behavior have their basis in the non loving parts of our familial and sociatial elements.  Here's to Loving Community!  Pax Christi!  RV  PS - The video below was shot at the Franciscan Labyrinth.  In the future I hope to add more shots of the actual turns and some of the meditative points related

Franciscanism is as Franciscanism Does!

Well Here I am once more.  My lack of techno skills makes this very difficult at times but I get so happy when some little thing goes right :0)  Above is one short clip of the "Franciscan Labyrinth" several brothers and I have begun to install in the hills above Ashland.  I can't seem to transfer direct video from my phone but if I put it first on You Tube then it may work.  We'll see.  The point here is that I would like to share a bit of the peace and reasoning for this adventure up at "Camp David".  This particular clip is the last turn of the labyrinth journey.  Each of the turns has a thought for reflection attached.  These thoughts are fluid and will be changed up, or ignored all together, as the adventure unfolds.  Release of concerns while entering a labyrinth does not mean that reflection is necessarily needed in the journey.  Release is releasing and not focusing.  However focus is good, as well, depending on the sojourner's need.

In the past few weeks I've spent a little time with my youngest daughter, Alexandria, in Denver.  Never having driven back there before it was a good adventure and the scenery was beautiful.  The sandstone cliffs were very impressive, especially at "Red Rock" just West of Denver.  It was good for myself and my friend Judy to spend time with Alexandria as she was a bit unsettled in her new home.  Tim is very busy with the new job and at that time she had not found a position for herself.
One of the other sites visited while there was a Catholic shrine to St Francis X. Cabrini also just West of Denver.  This is a site of a retreat center and vacation home for orphans started early last century by a Catholic nun for the Italian immigrants who had settled in Denver as a result of the mining industry.  St Cabrini was the first American to be canonized.  I do not believe she was a Franciscan but she had taken the name of Francis and she as well was an Italian.  The site was very peaceful and pleasurable to visit.  One of the paths was to the top of a mountain with a 30' statue of Jesus at the peak.  On the stairway up there were many mosaics of the "Stations of the Cross".  Artistically very impressive.  I would like to share some of them as the future unfolds.

So the question may arise as to the meaning of the title above.  We were listening to a book on CD during the trip home.  The book is by one of my favorite novelists, Clive Cussler, by the title of The Mayan Secrets.  In a nutshell the book deals with the Mayan literature which was destroyed by the Church during the conquest.  Most of the purging of these "evil" books "of the Devil" were precipitated by the Franciscan Order.  The story deals with some of the Codices saved by the action of another Catholic "Dominican".  The "truth" of any of this is not really important as it is a novel.  However the part which bothered me is important to note.  I have had great friends in both of those orders and if you have read much of this blog you know my opinion of St Francis and the Order which bears his name.  Truth be told, just as much of the actions of "Christians" done in the name of Jesus bear little resemblance to the message of Jesus, there have surely been much wrong done in the name of the order of St Francis.  It is a retelling of the "Tree bearing good fruit" story.  One must be diligent at all times of "Where is the Love" here.
Trying to be a Good Fruit Bearer in the names of Jesus and Francis!  RV

The Beauty of the Transforming Life :0)

http://conta.cc/14almQH

Here is the post mentioned before which has a beautiful butterfly in the title.  Besides Hawaii the Butterflies, And Moths, of the world have a special place in my heart.  These particular members of the insect kingdom are such good representative creatures of the transforming world.  I choose to use this tense of the word transform as I believe that as with life, Transformed existence is really a journey moreso than a destination.

I am very happy with the path my life has taken me the past several years.  I'm not so happy with the primary reason for that trip, the passing of my dear wife, Sherita, almost five years ago, 9/14/2008.  It is what it is and her Peace and Reward I am very sure of.
So while I was still in Laguna for the Rotary Event Fundraiser there was another event going on in the beach area next to us.  For the next couple of months they have what is called "The Parade of Elephants".  When I first heard of it I was envisioning a circus parade.  Not So.  This is an art event where various artists paint what appears to be a ceramic elephant,  about four feet tall,  in all kinds of motif's depicting something to do with animal rights and the horrors of war which has impacted their existence.  It is not limited to elephants but it was motivated by an elephant, more or less. A small elephant in Asia stepped on a land mine and lost his right foot.  He has been fitted with a prosthesis and has become the poster elephant for the cause.  It has been an international effort raising a lot of money for ecological and peace promoting causes.
Why is this a good story?  Because it points out how much good one person, or elephant, can do with the right connection and community involvement.  The Rotary Clubs "International" is also a fine group which uses "Service above Self" as their motto.  Their work in Education, Water Treatment, Polio eradication, etc. is just the tip of their efforts.  And the big point here is that they do most of this by partnering with clubs all over the world essentially in a "Community of Service".
Upon returning to the Valley I was able to go see "The Butler".  Not many people in our "over 50" audience were talking much during the movie.  If I am any indication, it was because I was having a hard time processing all that went on during those years.   I was in college during those times.  But I wasn't very awake, I am sad to say.  I did some reports on Vietnam and I saw news pieces on Birmingham but it felt like those places were a long way away.  I was very insulated out here on the West Coast.  It was all about getting a job and finding the right girl, and car.   In retrospect I am very sad and sorry I wasn't more awake.   But as stated above: It Is What It Is.  I am so very glad that I was blessed with the life I've had, especially my kids.  I just hope I can do better in the time I have left to make this world a more "Beloved Community".  I especially hope my kids and their families can because They have the energy.
Then we hear about "Syrian" issue.  Wow!  Is that a kettle of rotting fish, or what?  What is a peace loving person/country/world to do?  Maybe this is a great opportunity??? For Transformation!

The beauty of the transforming or awaking life is not limited to the individual. It does usually begin at that point and ultimately that is where we are most responsible for the outcome. However the same effect is at work in all levels of society, as long as the ego (individually, familial, societal, national) does not hold sway.

At the “Morning Manna” Book Club last Tuesday we were discussing whether the world is getting worse or incrementally better. It certainly can be argued that the world is going to Hell in a hand basket, however I have a different view. I would postulate that it is a question of perspective. Our world is shrinking at a great rate due to the information revolution. It is said that the total of data available in the world doubles at least every ten years! That is huge sensory input. The result for my point is that we see so much so quickly, good and bad and benign, that it has two major effects on us.

In the first place we see the bad easier than the good. Anyone watching a “reality” show would probably have to attest to this truth. Although a “feel good” story is nice the other pole is more “exciting” and is much better press. It seems the only time wondrous events are really noteworthy are when they are in reaction to a “Natural” disaster. Ironic that these events are often termed “Acts of God” The second effect is that we shut down into a defense mode as the input is too great. We see so much happening that we just want to defend our status quo so we do not get lost in the magnitude of change. This can and usually does yield a very polarized and essentially egotistical position and world view.

So how does this train of thought translate to the current Middle East crisis in Syria.

This is serious stuff. But I still believe that it could be an “incrementally” better step for mankind. A while ago on this site I spoke of the concept of “Contingent Sovereignty” where a Nation is held accountable for how well it does the essential responsibility of protection and care of All its citizens. A truly huge responsibility the dispatch of which none has done with impunity, if truth be told. That being said, I do believe our country has tried to do it’s best to be a leader in this pursuit of human rights. We miss the mark very often, we sin, but there is no where else on Earth I would wish to live. To be the leader does not mean unilateral action. Unilateral action feeds right into that Nationalistic Ego mindset that We are the savior of the world. Also a unilateral action by a leader, however right and powerful, usually leads to some form of suicide. I believe the past ten or twelve years is pretty demonstrable proof of this statement. To be a great leader is to inspire others to follow on a path toward a common goal. Theoretically this was the reason for the establishment of the United Nations and before that the League of Nations. To work together for the common good and the betterment of mankind. Unfortunately in order to gain acceptance these attempts were emasculated from the get go with some Nationalistic Ego impediments. In other words the veto power given to five nations, including ours. The good of these attempts are that they provide a forum for communication and they have done much for health and children. The weakness is still that with that veto impediment any real sanctions of wrongdoing are dealt with on totally Nationalistic and “Treaty/Ally” parameters.

Should a country be allowed to gas its’ citizens in violation of decades old international law? With impunity? I doubt most would agree they should. But a key word here is impunity. Are “we”, whoever we become, trying to punish or correct behavior? If we act unilaterally, or with a group of essentially nominal allies, to punish a wrong doer we have another “Endless” war. If the world acts in consort, after proper but swift deliberation, to correct an injustice then we have a police action to protect the defenseless.

I do not pretend to understand all of the nuances involved with these issues so I will cut myself short with just another few comments and a prayer for good discernment for the ones who do understand those nuances.

I believe that President Obama may be a very sly fox in his overture to the congress in this case. It may allow for better discretion to eventually prevail while he still can make the case for the gravity of the situation.

I am gratified by the call of Pope Francis for a better path. I would be happier if he would seek such a path with other world religious leaders who are close to the issue; including but not limited to the Muslim imams, the Russian Orthodox prelate, the Jewish leaders, and maybe the Dali Lama for good measure. Where are they in this discussion? What good does a religious leader do if he or she cannot speak up for justice?

I am gratified for the caution exercised by the EU leaders and the Secretary General of the UN.

We are at a crossroads in our history which may not offer only two choices. I pray for what many call the “Spirit of the Christ” or the “Holy Spirit” to be upon All world leaders at this time. PAX CHRISTI! RV

Home Is Where The Heart Is!

It is said that Home is where the Heart is!  I am sitting here in Laguna Beach, California, following a Rotary event yesterday, Thinking about home in Oregon, Looking at the video above of Pearl Cove, and talking this morning with Alexandria about her recent move to Denver with Tim.  I am wondering if ones heart is kind of like yeast in that it could be "at home" in multiple places.  Hopefully being present in each and at the same time being a "yeasty" effect in each as well.  Wondering if maybe that is the meaning of the mystical approach to understanding God as being All in All.  It certainly takes away the "ego center and Tribal center" of the individual when you are at the same time everywhere and yet nowhere.
On my travel this past week I have been rereading "Simplicity" by Richard Rohr.  Simplicity and balance seems to be a very important aspect of the transformed life.  I hope with each passing day I can get closer to those goals.
I need to post at least one of his "Daily Meditations" within a few days as he is using a beautiful butterfly picture in this series of thoughts.
Here's to butterflies, transformation, simplicity and balance.  RV

Something Worth The Read In A Newspaper!

Insights gained in a talk with God while waiting in the movie line | Leonard Pitts - The News Tribune

The article above is worth the read.  It looks at the world a bit like Jesus would.  He must have the patience of a saint to put up with this creation of His :0)  This past weekend saw our family gathering together to witness Alexandria and Timothy proclaim their vows of Marriage.  There are lots of photos on facebook and I will try to post a few here at a later time.  My friend and brother in the Franciscan tradition, David, did the officiating at the service and I was able to say a few words as well.  The event was a great success.  On Monday Michael, Tanya and I took a trip up the hill to "Camp David" to view the "Franciscian Style" Labyrinth which is in the process of being installed.  We call it Franciscian as it is a classical style but with honor and respect for the natural terrain and doing no damage to the site.  This means using the native rocks and following the contours of the area.  There is another labyrinth about a mile down the road built by Earthteach back in the 90's.  It is of the 11 circuit Chartes style which is very popular and as a matter of fact is even visible from above via Google Earth.  Davids on the other hand is based on a seven circuit classical Greek style and probably will never be visible from above as it winds through an old growth tree canopy, kind of like how St Francis may have done in the hills above Assisi.  I have included the "butterfly" above because I have seen many up in the woods and they always make me remember Sherita.  When we walked the labyrinth on Monday we stopped at each switchback and had a thought.  It is one way to enjoy the path other than just walking in silent meditation.  Any technique, with respect, is certainly appropriate.  Anyhow I've included a few of the thoughts here for reflection.  These are quotes from many sources which are short and cause for reflection.  We hope to inscribe these among others at each turn on a "tree cookie".  It seems appropriate to change them out on occasion as well.  In this style there are actually twenty switchbacks and one at the beginning.  We begin with:
1.  In The Beginning Was The Word!  I AM the Alpha!  The Bible
2.  It Is Better To Light One Candle, Than To Curse The Darkness!  The Christophers
3.  God Created Us In His (Their) Image and We Were Kind (Arrogant) Enough To Return The Favor!  Various
4.  The Truth I Have Now Come To Realize Is That God Does Not Have Favorites, But That Anybody Who Fears God And Does     What Is Right Is Acceptable To Him! (Acts 10:34-Peter)
5.  God Comes To Us Disguised As Our Life!   Paula D'Arcy
6.  (Those Who) Dedicate Our Lives To Building Bridges...The Price Is That You Will Always Pay, Like All Bridges, Is To Be Walked On From Both Sides!
7.  Lord! Make Me An Instrument Of Your Peace!  St Frank
8.  Learn And Obey The Rules Very Well, So You Will Know How To Break Them Properly.  Dali Lama
9.  Truly Generous Orthodoxy - They Have Transcended But Also Included All That Went Before!  Brian McLaren
10.  Preach The Gospel (Praise God) Always And When Necessary...Use Words!  St Francis
11.  Live Simply...So Others May Simply Live!
12.  Service Above Self!  Rotary International
13.  Act Justly - Love Tenderly - Walk Humbly (With God)!  Mi 6:8
14.  May We Also Be Someone In Whose Presence Others Are Better Able To Recognize God's Presence In Their Lives!                    James Findley
15.  Lord! May We Never Want To Live In Houses With Doors!  African Prayer
16.  The Strongest Poisen Known To Man Came From Caesar's Laurel Crown!  William Blake
17.  The Arc Of The Moral Universe Is Long, But It Bends Toward Justice! Martin Luther King paraphrase of Theodore Parker

An Interesting Perspective on the levels of Evil!

http://conta.cc/14rkXEt

The post by Richard noted above is a very interesting look at the levels of Evil.  And possibly a look also at the idea of "Original Sin".  It has seemed to me that our tendancy, and in some ways necessity, to let the Ego control our lives can be seen to be the "original" path to excesses.  As Richard and others have said we do need to have a healthy self image or confidence especially in the first half of life.  A strong self image is helpful to feel good about ourselves, find a path and education in this world, raise a family, and be "successful".  It is not the "Ego" which is problematic, it is the "self absorbed" ego.  We are created as children of God, in God's image, so why would we not find pride in that fact.   It is when we become self absorbed, individually, communially, culturally, and institutionally, that we as a species run into problem.  Pax Christi!  Roberto PS-  While in Assisi we visited the church of San Damiano and the crucifix before which St Francis had his "Ah Ha" moment.  On the rail before that crucifix is written a prayer he would say.  I believe that restating it here would be good.  Especially while considering limits on our Ego.
All Highest, Glorious God,
Cast Your Light into the Darkness of my Heart,
Give me Right Faith, Firm Hope, Perfect Charity
And Profound Humility, With Wisdom and Perception,
O Lord,
So That I May Do What Is Truly Your Holy Will.
Amen

Chasing Francis Daily!

Most of the time when I'm making my chaplaincy rounds at the hospitals I am wearing my "Franciscan cross".  The most common name for the cross is a "Tau Cross".  Having been used by several early church fathers but most notably by St Francis.  Anyhow, a few days ago at Ashland I met a wonderful woman undergoing cancer treatment named Mary.  She had a great attitude toward life and we had a wonderful discussion.  In the course of our talk I mentioned the cross.  She questioned me as to why it was called a "Tao" cross.  I never realized that the Tau would so easily be confused with the Tao religion of the East.  However the comparison may not be so far off, actually.
The Mystical tradition shared by modern contemplatives as well as the likes of Sts Francis and Clair are very tuned to the totality of Gods presence in all of creation.  Now listen to a very simple definition of the Tao religion.  "Tao can be roughly stated to be the "flow" of the universe, or the force behind the natural order.  Believed to be the influence that keeps the universe balanced and ordered.  Tao is associated with nature, due to a belief that nature demonstrates the Tao."
Sounds very Franciscan to me.  The video above is shot in the town of Assisi, Italy.  The audio seems to be a little skewed but the scenery and memories are beautiful.  Pax Christi!  Roberto Vincente

Religionless Christianity!

http://conta.cc/19D9fuE

Remember my friends and family that the above link is coming from a Roman Catholic Franciscan Priest.  This one post just about says it all as to the basis supporting my spiritual journey AND my continued faith in the history we all share, warts and all.  We can and will do better to bring "Thy Will be Done - on Earth as it is in Heaven".  The key is to see more clearly, communicate more kindly (using words only when necessary), AND Loving more deeply.  Lovingly Yours!  RV

Pearl Cove reprise!

Been home in the Rogue Valley a couple of weeks now.  This spot as well is a very special spot of Creation, the "first Bible" as Richard among others have stated.  I am very blessed to have this area as a home as well as to have a heart home in Kauai as well.  Don't really think I'll end up living over there part time but who knows??  On this post I'm going to attempt to insert a video I shot of Pearl on my last day there.  It will show Michaels Cross as well as the succulent and evergreen center of the potential Labyrinth.  In my Western Garden book on the opening page is a dedication by Sherita when she gave it to me in 2002.  That dedication is something I have told Michael that I would like as a memory sentiment in my passing.  Hence I'm including it here, again let me hasten to add that I'm in No hurry for this event.

Well, for whatever reason I couldn't post the video but put these two on here instead.  I was able to post the video on facebook but blogger wouldn't accept :0(.  Great trip!  Thanks Son!  RV

The Pilgrimage Continues!

The Pilgrimage  Days Four Through  Ten!

Not that a “reason” is necessary for a trip to Kauai but I wish to relate a bit of the spiritual aspects of this trip.  Obviously I haven’t been posting on here daily but I have been reflecting and reasoning a lot while here.  Sometimes with Michael and sometimes on my own.
Michael and I visited the Hawaiian Hindu Monastery a couple of times.  The liturgy was new to us but the Peace and Respect of the place was palpable and very satisfying.  Probably the most significant thing I experienced while there was to appreciate the prayer and chanting but especially the portrayal of the God “Shiva” in a dancing mode.  I found it rather interesting to reflect as well upon the word used in the Greek to represent  the Christian Trinitarian God, “Pericohesis”.  The word is best translated as a “circle dance”  as in all aspects of God whirling about in community activity to the Love and betterment of all.
I’ve not made any secret to my kids that when it is my time to move on that I would like to have my remains scattered on Mahaulapu at Pearl Cove.  Not that I’m in a big hurry but this is very much the most special place on Kauai for me.  While there this time I was blessed by Michael breaking his walking stick and fabricating and setting a  cross in her honor on the rocks above Pearl Cove.  The elements may not let it stay there but the sentiment will last forever.  When ever I visit and then leave that spot That lump comes back to visit my heart and soul.  Feels sad but also alive and connected.  I believe that if I ever do remarry that it will take place at that spot.  Sounds strange, I know, but it’s not and if that big IF did occur She would understand perfectly and our union would be stronger for the experience.    When I went back for a last visit yesterday I started laying out a limestone path for a labyrinth just above Sherita’s spot.  Lord willing I’ll finish it up in October.
In between these special spiritual moments Michael and I walked a couple of “Knarly” hikes through the wild areas of Kauai.  One was what’s called the “Powerline” trail.  Ten plus miles from above Kapa’a Northwest to near Princeville.  Took a lot longer that we thought but it was a good “Adventure” .  We did scrap the idea of camping at Anini on the North shore and found a extra night in the resort area we were checking into on Saturday.  That shower felt really, really good.  The second hike was supposed to be following a horse trail to Kipu Kai Beach.  It was more of a goat trail and got pretty dangerous for the ol man in several spots.  I was very happy to have Michael with me on these two adventures.  Thanks! Son!
Since the second hike was starting near Pearl Cove I suppose one could draw a blessing from the proximity.  Kind of like accepting the Wild And Wondrous sides of creation.  It is that way for me.
Pax Christi!  Roberto

This post by Richard may be a real good reasoning for this little jaunt into the Garden Isle.  Not that I need another good reason.  Hanging out with my son Michael has been wonderful all by it's self.  This is now the eighth day of the Pilgrimage, I believe.  Kind of loose track of time over here :0)  We came on island Wend
esday.  Spent the afternoon getting supplies and we did decide on a "rent-a-wreck" to make the travel about more effective.  So far we have visited the Hindu Temple twice and were very impressed both times.  Not likely either of us would ever become practicing Hindus but our conversations were very enjoyable.  Michael's employer is an Indian based I T Company so he was especially blessed with the visit.

Day Two of the Pilgrimage

So as Michael finishes his last day of work I am attempting to work on some last minute details.  The Sun is trying to break out here in Laguna and looks like it will be a great day.  I was looking at a e-newsletter from the Hindu Monastery yesterday and saw something very interesting.  I will attempt to put the picture on here.  Further posts from RV will have to be via my phone so I hope I may continue this as a thread would be nice to look back on.
Well I believe the details are mostly in order and it's looking good so far!  Walking on the beach for a little while and occurred to me that the wave action is kind of symbolic of Life and the Transcendence of mankind.  That's about as deep as I'm going to get today.  Couldn't find what I was looking for to post here from the Hindu Monastery in Kapaa.  It's a video of their latest newsletter.  I showed the first picture to Michael (a group of devotees) and asked him if he saw anything unusual?  He answered "You mean something besides the woman dressed in white in the center who looks a lot like Sherita!" !

The" Pilgrimage"

Day one!  So I have headed South to Laguna Beach to meet up with Michael.  We are heading SW to Kauai this week.  I am calling this little get away a "Pilgrimage".  I will attempt to give forth some kind of an altruistic reason for calling this trip a pilgrimage.  Michael definitely needs a break from his new job so I have selflessly offered to go with him to keep him out of trouble :0)  So today I'm just hanging out in Laguna since the poor boy has to work the next two days.  Walking downtown to the Laguna Coffee House I passed by a hedge made of Jasmine flowers and then saw one of my favorite little trees, a Japanese Cryptomaria, and then a rose garden all in the same block.  I think this could be a very nice place to live.
We intend to return to Kauai where we all gathered for Sheritas Memorial in '09.  That was the last time my three(Oregon) kids and I took a vacation together.  Even considering the reason for the trip we had a blast.  This time however Michael and I want to check out some of the more remote areas of the Island.  Among other places we intend to visit the Hindu Monastery on the Wailua River.  So there you have it ; Our pilgrimage is to integrate the ancient traditions of the Hindu faith, one of the most beautiful examples of Gods creation in the island itself, our Christian heritage, and the spirit of Sherita.  That works for me!  Pax Christi!  Roberto!

The "Pilgrimage"

So today is day one of a pilgrimage.  My son Michael and I are headed to the island of Kauai to see the sights from a new perspective.  We leave early Wednesday for Lihue but poor Michael has to work the next two days.  So poor dad has to hangout in the beachfront town of Laguna Beach, reading and drinking lattes and Margaritas :0)  Not so sure how effective the posting will be from Kauai since I'll not have my computer with me, just the smartphone (which I'm not smart enough to use to it's full capacity).  But I'll try to say something as often as possible.  Walking down to the Laguna Coffee Co this AM I spotted a hedge made of jasmine flowers and one of my favorite trees, a Japanese Cryptomaria, in the same block.  This could be a pretty cool place to live.  As soon as I can figure out a way to phrase it I'll come up with some kind of a altruistic reason for calling this a pilgrimage :0)  How about a celebration of Nature and Beauty?

The Holy vs The Unholy!

http://conta.cc/Yu2B29

There is a picture associated with this post of Richards Daily Meditation.  It is a painting of St Francis which I find very nice.  In relationship to the subject of this Meditation about the nature of Religion and systems related thereto; I am finding myself drawn to the idea of "Franciscanism" as a better view of my path than any of the paths my life so far has brought me.  I hope I have "usually" been a great father.  With that exception most of my life has definitely been a path of trial and error.  I haven't been a very good son, brother, boyfriend, husband, lover, restauranture, Catholic, Lutheran, etc, etc, etc.  I am very glad that the new Pope has taken the name of Francis.  Maybe following the example of St Francis I can improve my footprint in this world.  Lord, Make me an instrument of Your Peace!  Where there is hatred, etc.....Let me sow Love (Your Love)  Pax Christi,  Roberto

A "Mystical" look at God

A gift from Richard for the Mystics of Old and New!    A Whole New God Meditation 46 of 52

Mysticism begins when the totally transcendent image of God starts to recede; and there’s a deepening sense of God as imminent, present, here, now, safe, and even within me. In Augustine’s words, “God is more intimate to me than I am to myself” or “more me than I am myself.” St. Catherine of Genoa shouted in the streets, “My deepest me is God!”

So you must overcome this gap to spiritually know things and then, ironically, you’ll know that Someone Else is doing the knowing through you. God is no longer “out there.” At this point, it’s not like one has a new relationship with God; it’s like one has a whole new God! “God himself is my counselor, and at night my innermost being instructs me,” says the Psalmist (16:7). God is operating with you, in you, and even as you.

The mystics are those who are let in on this secret mystery of God’s love affair with the soul, with my soul in particular—and that God loves me uniquely. All true love gives us this sense of being special, chosen, and “like nobody else.” That is why we are so joyful in the presence of our lover, who mirrors us with a divine mirror.       Amen!  Pax Christi!  RV

Love the Balance Point!

Thinking a lot about balance lately.
I was looking for a picture of the "Libra" Lady, you know holding the scales of justice, and then I saw this picture.  Considering sometimes how very Unbalanced "justice" can be this picture seems a whole lot more honest.  The symbiotic coupling of two soulmates just has to be all about balance.
So I have tried in the history of this literary attempt of mine to post content and stories which seem to expand or bolster the transformational energy at work in our world.  I've referred to many different artists all of which I value greatly.  A great part of that value is the wide spectrum from which I see their thought coming.  Bring it on!  Philosophical, Political, Spiritual, Interpersonal, Ecological, etc., etc., etc.
Recently ran across a wonderful piece by my friend Barb.  She is writing about the subject of conscious connection between many aspects of our life, balance and non duality.  She relates nicely to a connection of our personal lives and soulmates to the balance of nature and spirituality.

"I've used Undefended Love as a method to journey together with a life partner. We had to learn to trust and support each other to remain present with triggers/shadows so they naturally release first with a learned inner process, and we then came to each other with perceived challenges from Love rather than conditioned reaction.
That method turned shadows into pointers towards Home, and helped us not only get closer to our own Christed consciousness faster, but made our love grow even deeper -- that 3-week to 2-year honeymoon stage lasted for many years, our entire time together

Spirituality to me is knowing we can choose how we want to be present and aim towards opening and living from the heart. I feel most of us seek to find our own unique metaphor to describe the undescribable that speaks to us and I encourage others to love the paths and metaphors that speak to them.
For my journey, I've studied Science of Mind, Progressive Christianity, esoteric Christianity, Course in Miracles, Andrew Harvey, ancient Celtic writings, Native American mythology, HeartMath, Compassionate Communication, open-focus mind training, and nondual wisdom.
I've even heard the Christ consciousness whispering to me between the lines in more conservative religion and atheism. I don't follow one "path" and don't think my way of seeing things is permanent, nor better than others.
Years ago as a young adult when I ran from what I called Bible thumpers, I discovered there are also New Age thumpers.
I've found that many who insist they are constantly in the Now and/or are spiritually advanced and insist their friends must always be in the Now and as spiritually advanced as they are -- are actually some of the most not-Now, controlling and micro-managing folks I've ever experienced.
And that those who love life -- love to plant gardens or explore architecture or?? without preaching their version of spirituality at every turn seem the closest to how God resonates with me -- being expressions of physical anchors for the Now to come into perception ('being' rather than preaching as human channels of Heaven on earth.)

How are you environmentally conscious & what are you doing to help the planet?
I've been a nature lover since I was a kid and now write and photograph eco-farming and inspired community for a living.
Yet while I don't resonate with 'man'kind having dominion over nature, I don't go to the opposite extreme and "worship" nature either, seeing humans as lower than nature. Rather, I see it as an equal sister. It can be seen as stuck in the duality also -- at one minute it has the capacity to create paradise on earth even without compost as in the discovery of terra preta -- and yet in another minute can rip a crying infant gosling from it's emotionally tortured mother to be consumed live by a predator. It feels that Nature is also on a path out of duality to Oneness right along with us. So I see Nature as our partner.
I feel the way we negatively treat the earth is a result of what's inside us -- seeing disconnection with oneness, and I feel the best thing we can do for the earth is restore our inner world while doing what we can on the "outer" without it making us angry and causing more divisiveness."
Thanks! Barbie!

Blessed Happy Holy Saturday! "Our Parent"

Richards Holy Saturday Posting

I believe that if you click on the link above it should lead you to a post of Richards Daily Meditation for this day.  I love this man of Gods work and pray that he will be one of the greatest impacts on the future of Christ among us.  "Mercy is what pleases me, not sacrifices" (Matthew 9:13) and the rest of the post essentially reframes the usual perspective of the Easter season.  Worth the read.

In my chaplaincy volunteer work I quite often pray the Our Father with patients.  It is a good prayer and is one the patients can relate to usually very well.  It can also be a good launching point about prayer to God as well as the power of forgiveness.  Over the years I've seen a fair number of "paraphrased" translations from New Thought, Aramaic, old English, Latin, etc..  Considering the semantic differences out there in the modern world I can see some "validity" in so doing.  The other day I came up with one myself and am quite pleased with the result.  Let me know your thoughts if you wish.
Oh Loving God, Creator of All within All Universes, Known and Unknown-
Blessed Be Your Names,
May Your Presence Be Acknowledged By All Your Creation As You Desire In Your Holy Domain
Please Give Us Oh Divine Parents All That We Need, To Do Your Will In Our Daily Lives
And Please Forgive Us Our Failures To Do Your Will As We Forgive Others Who Trespass On Us
Lead Us, Stumbling Children That We Are, Not Into Temptation And Deliver Us From Evil
Especially As We Think Too Highly Of Ourselves
Thanks PaPa!

And then maybe this one could have some value as well.  Opening our hearts to the Mystery of God!
Oh Blessed Creator of the Universes!
Hallowed be Your Names and Blessed are We to be in Your Creation, And Created in Your Image!
May Your Holy Kingdom be Present in this World as it is in Your Dimension!
Please give Us this Day all that We Need as We, being Christs Body, see the Need in Others!
Transform Us Oh God into that Body of the Church of The Christ!
Forgive Us as We Falter, Oh Divine One, As We Forgive Those who Trespass Against Us!
Please Guide Us, Oh Holy Parents, Away from the Temptations of the Evil One especially manifested as a self absorbed ego ! For Yours Is Our Kingdom Now and Forever As We Rest In Your Glory!

My Path Revisited!

This past year as I've kind of stated in the past few posts has been somewhat of a reflection of the impact of the forces of this journal.  As I'm embarking more so on a clerical path to a very limited degree some have asked a bit about my background.  It seems appropriate to recap a bit.  Before delving into an outline of my past I feel it would be good to mention my concerns about the future.  I wish too be of service to creation.  Seems the most efficacious place for that would be spending time with my grandson, continuing to read, write and maybe teach .  However I also feel a strong desire to spend at least part of the year in the Islands, esp. Kauai.  I hope and pray the path will be made clear too me.
I was initially raised and nurtured in the Roman Catholic tradition.  I am happy with that background and even today consider myself a Catholic in the pure sense of the word, universal.  In my early adult years I drifted away as a result of divorce.  I valued the Eucharist but denied the separatist "club" aspect of the sacrament.  I don't think Christ would have made a very good Catholic.  But he was a very good Franciscan. I have spent 60+ years as a spiritual seeker with a fair amount of time with a variety of Christian denominations including but not limited to Baptist, Non-Denominational, Seventh Day Adventist, New Age or New Thought.  I have settled within the Lutheran as a result of finding my soul mate there.  Since Sheritas passing over I started reading "Emergent" authors leading to a new appreciation of the totality or the cosmic nature of the Christ.  At least a third of this blog deals with this path so I will not restate it at this time.  As a result I suppose one could describe me as a hybrid Spiritual Christian.  I'm happy with that. A question that still stays with me is; Am I to be on this path as a solo spirit or is it possible there is yet another soul mate for me out there?  I really do feel that there should be as God is not a gender and we are created in Gods image.  Therefore the best follower of God should have both genders represented.  Makes sense to me and today I started to think that it is possible.  We'll see.  Pax Christi!  RV

The Why!

The last post was an "Order of Service" which I've been using as a guide for a service I've been providing at a "Memory Care" facility here in Medford.  I was requested to provide such a service this past Christmas Season and it has proven to be a blessing to me as well as the residents at Fern Gardens.  In essence the service is a hybrid of my Catholic and Lutheran experience over the years and I am very happy with the content.  It seems to mean a lot to them as well.  Even though the residents seem to have memory problems the "worship" touch points seem to resonate very well with most of them.  Haven't been able to be there the past couple of weeks due to some health lock down issues but hopefully this week will be good.  I don't know how many of them are tuned into the "papal" changes of the past two weeks but we'll see.  I am very happy with at least the name chosen as a sign of perspective change.  I was hoping for a younger selection but Pope Francis seems to be very alert and we should try to honor the wisdom of age.  As I get older I believe that more and more :0) !  Considering my pilgrimage to Asissi last year I am very pleased with the new pope's name choice.  Pax Christi!  Roberto Vincenti

Entrance and Greeting

This Is The Day - That The Lord Has Made Ps 118:24

In the name … May the Grace of our Lord..Love of God the Father….Fellowship of the Holy Spirit.. be with you All!

“Sing a New Song” Ps 98

Confession…It is a Good thing

I confess to Almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault . In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done, and in what I have failed to do.

May almighty God have mercy on us, Forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen

God is a Great God and knows our every need…He knows our weakness and yet still Loves us. Our Lord gave His life willingly for us. Forgiveness from sin and failure is available this very day. Jesus rose from the grave after giving His life for His creation. We are forgiven and free to live in a New way. Christ is born. Christ is risen!

Gloria (Lu 2:14) Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father. Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the Glory of God the Father. Amen

Readings Epistle (Phil 3:17);(Heb 12:2) Gospel (Lu13:31)

Nicene Creed-We believe in one God, the Father, The Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, One in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen!

Eucharistic Liturgy…The Good news of Christ..

May the Lord accept the offering at my hands for the praise and glory of His Name, for our good, and the good of All His Church.

The Lord be with you! …Lift up Your Hearts!…Let us give thanks to the Lord our God!…It is right to give Him thanks and Praise!

Holy..Holy…Holy Lord..God of power and Might Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. H..H..in the Highest!

Whenever we are tempted to exault our own importance, to think of ourselves more highly than we ought; grant us a measure of your own humility, that we might be more anxious to serve than to be served, more ready to give than to want - Lord Jesus, fix our thoughts on you as we pray the prayer You taught us---

Our Father. + Deliver Us Lord from every evil and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy and grace keep us free from sin and protect us from ALL anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior Jesus the Christ! Lu 11:1 - May the peace of the Lord be with you always!

Words of institution (Mat26:26) And while they were eating…, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing,He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, Eat: This Is My Body.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Proclamation…

This IS the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world…Happy are those who are called to His supper.

Received by Faith (Mt 8:5) LORD I am not worthy to receive you, But only say the word and I shall be healed!

Welcome to the table of the Lord! Served as we serve one another!

This Is The Day...That The Lord Has Made!

How can each of us make this a day within which we have done something to make our Lord happy with our part of His creation?  Love!  Can it really be that simple?  Yes!  I believe that it is so simple, but not simplistically so.  In December of 2012 I went on line to receive my ordination by the ULC, Universal Life Church, of Modesto, California.  My son, Michael, did this a few years ago to be legally able to officiate at his sister Alexandria's marriage.  I looked at their website and mission statement and decided to do the same.  My reasoning is that the past year or so I have been doing a fair amount of chaplaincy work at our local hospitals and felt it would be good to have a Rev in my name.  I thought quite a bit about this step.  I did want the legal status for ministerial flexibility but did not in any way to dismiss the honor and respect I have for many "professional" clergy with whom I am acquainted.
I pray that none of them will take offense and that what ministering I am led to will be a blessing to the body of Christ.
Shortly after receiving my ordination I was asked to minister to a "memory center" senior living facility in Medford.  I am in the process of tweaking a worship service which will be a blessing to them and so far am quite encouraged.  They seem to be very engaged and happy at my efforts, with the Grace of Christ.  One day at a time!  Pax Christi!  RV

The Nature of Prayer 101

Happy New Year!  Welcome to 2013.  The first post here is to again highlight my mentor Richard and on of his daily meditations regarding "Prayer".  This is so beautiful and gracious I thought it would be a good way to start off this "Year of Transformation".  Pax Christi RV.  http://conta.cc/WdkCj5
